<strong>Misalignment is never cheap.</strong> Sometimes your agent can go completely in the wrong direction and course correcting can take longer than if you just implemented it yourself.</li>

It’s hidden away, sometimes intentionally, contributing to that “magical” experience.</p>
<p style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5">Of course, the best way to demystify any "magic" technology is to take it apart step by step. To learn it intimately, to understand its inputs, behaviors, and outputs.</p>

<strong>How large language models work:</strong> The model is the thing that writes the code. You want to learn how models are trained, what they can & can't do, what the “smart zone” is and how to stay in it, how hallucinations happen, why models are stateless. (And I promise: no math)</li>

<strong>How harnesses work:</strong> The harness is the software interface you use when you want to use the model: Claude Code or Codex, for example. You want to learn how harnesses work, what they do behind the scenes, how to best manage your work sessions, what context is, when to compact it and when to clear, how to keep the agent on track (aka steering).</li>

<strong>Your agent’s environment:</strong> Your codebase is your agent’s home, and it needs to be built so the agent can do its job. This includes decisions such as what to put in steering documents, how to structure your app, how to handle multi-session workflows, and how to make sure you’re building the right thing to start with.</li>

<p style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5">Harnesses are designed to hide things like:</p>

They want their custom tooling to feel unique. They want you to believe that the magic is in their ecosystem and special only to them, so you won't switch to their competitor.</p>
<p style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5">They also aren't motivated to guide you very much when it comes to token efficiency or costs… that's how they get paid.</p>
